SBTC Club rides this Sunday 23rd October 2010

Oct 21,2010

by SBTC Team @ 9:15 am

1. Fast 100

100km departing from 5.30am at the Melbourne Hotel. The ride will maintain a fairly quick pace – sitting over 30 kph. This ride will be led by Chris Weier and will join up with the “Zupps ride” up to Redcliffe and back.

 2. Social 70

70 km also departing from 5.30am at the Melbourne hotel.
A slower average pace between 25 kph to 28kph will be maintained. This ride one is aimed at encouraging people to build up to longer distances, or just as a longer, social, chit-chat ride. This ride will be led by Tiff and Kristy and will either be a nice easy ride up to Sandgate and back.

3. Social Fusion 50

50km with the Fusion Cycles group, departing at 6.30am from Fusion Cycles. This group averages about 25 kph and rides the River Loop. They often finish up for breaky in Newstead, but of course we’d love to see you come along to breaky at the Melbourne hotel with the rest of the SBTC clan.

 4. Wet Weather Alternative

If it is raining on Sunday we advise cyclists against riding. Road bike tyres don’t handle corners or stopping quite as well as mountain bikes or hybrids, and car drivers have trouble seeing you too. Don’t end up in the back of an ambulance, a few of us have seen this happen to friends and it’s not fun!

So in the event of rain, please show up at the Melbourne hotel at 7.30am and we will do a one hour run, followed by breakfast. Keep a towel and a change of clothes in your car so that you can enjoy breakfast feeling warm.

If you are not sure, please check the SBTC facebook “status” in the morning, or contact Kristy on 0412 374 795.

 Cycling Etiquette

Standard cycling etiquette will be used on all rides – good use of hand signals and voice calls where nessary. Ask one of your fellow cyclists for tips if you are new to bunch rides.

Try to be arrive at the departure venue a little ahead of the departure time.

And most of all, enjoy your morning!

SBTC captures 3 places and the eye of Qld triathletes

Oct 20,2010

by SBTC Team @ 3:53 pm

Elaine, Chris and Katie proudly show off their rewards!

South Bank Tri Club made an impressive start to the Qld Gatorade Tri Series with over 20 club members taking part. In the same week that the club received its 89th member, SBTC also celebrated the following results:

  • 1st 25-29 Male,
  • 2nd 19-24 Female and
  • 2nd 55-59 Female.

The club was also boosted by the terrific and numerous comments made by the race commentators about the “newest Tri Club in Brisbane.”

We had a fantastic atmosphere at our base site which was right at the finish line. A huge, huge thanks to The Sheerin family and also Steve Houghton who allowed all of us to reside under both of their marquees. With word on our funding not coming in until mid December the shade will be incredibly valuable as the weather warms up.

The next challenge for a majority of SBTC members is the Noosa Tri Festival where in excess of 40 members are taking part in Australia’s largest Triathlon Festival. Whilst some may chose to taper, please know that all of our coaches will be taking this into account and adjusting the training schedules accordingly. So make sure you get to every session you can!

Don’t forget Sunday is our monthly club ride where we have three options available for all club members. The first two depart from and return to The Melbourne Hotel at West End. We have a 100km ride for the hardcore (32km/h+) riders, the second is a 70km ride (25km/h).

The third ride is the Fusion Riverloop ride which departs from and returns to their Newstead Store and all in plenty of time to come back and join the rest of us for Brekkie at the Melbourne Hotel!!! Not only will everyone be able to enjoy a great Breakfast back at the Melbourne Hotel from 8:30 onwards but we also have our club tshirt and jumper samples available to view and try on as well as our singlet range available for purchase.

Getting set for Gatorade Race 1

Oct 14,2010

by SBTC Team @ 8:13 am

SBTC has had a terrific start to the 2010/2011 triathlon season. We had members competing at the new Kingscliff triathlon and the Pink Triathlon at Caloundra in September, the rainy and muddy Gold Coast Half Ironman in the first week of October, and we are about to have a large contingent of athletes taking part in the upcoming Gatorade series triathlon at Raby Bay.

The monthly Fitnance Sweat sessions are becoming a favourite amongst club members who wish to improve their core and overall physical strength, as well as their flexibility – all of these elements will assist in improving your swimming, cycling, and running. Numbers are continuing to grow at the swimming and 2xu running squads as the weather begins to warm, and the mornings become lighter, so there is no excuse to skip training in favour of a sleep in now!

SBTC has also applied for a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant, and if successful in obtaining funding, the first thing on our procurement list is a nice, big, shady club tent, to keep us sheltered from the sun, rain, or whatever the weather decides to bring on race days.

We look forward to the upcoming tri season and expect to see you all at training and racing very soon!

Calypso Bay delivers plenty of challenges!

Oct 06,2010

by SBTC Team @ 6:52 am

Well, the weather forecasters were correct for once. The weekend of the Gold Coast Half Ironman brought rain, rain and more rain. But of course, in the world of triathlon, the show must go on, and go on it did at Calypso Bay, -a housing estate hidden in the cane fields near Jacobs Well. Competitors put their wetsuits on an hour early just to keep warm, while the poor spectators huddled under the few dry spots available.

The lucky sprint competitors were off first, and the Half Ironman competitors were able to cheer on Marion, Mark, Tiff and the rest of the SBTC crew as they exited the water and began their bike course.

The Half competitors were given a fairly straightforward swim course in Calypso Bay, with an “L-shaped” marked route through the cold and dark water.

Once on the bike, things got pretty miserable for most people – well, except for Marion’s race, where she reports kangaroos on course! The course was a simple two lap circuit through the cane fields, past farming paddocks (completely with lovely manure fragrances) and up to the Dreamworld roundabout.

The rain didn’t let up all morning and it seemed that the choice for eyewear was to wear glasses and have them fog up continually, or go without and have stinging rain in your eyes. The cold and wet made it difficult to convince oneself that eating and drinking was necessary, but at least it was something else to think about other than being at home asleep.

It was great to see and cheer on the other SBTC members passing in the other direction, or in some cases, being overtaken in the same direction!

The run course must have been the most fun for the spectators and competitors alike. The three lap course simply traversed various roads around Calypso Bay, and it was here that the SBTC supporters were finally able to get a glimpse of the athletes.

If the weather was ever something to finally be pleased about, it was that unlike the last two years , it was not a terribly hot and scorching day.

There were plenty of high fives between SBTC team members, and support from the SBTC team on the sidelines was fantastic as runners splashed through puddles and squished through the mud.

Although the rain kept coming down, the cheer squad didn’t let up all day, which was great motivation to keep the athletes running.

All in all, the day was probably not the most enjoyable one at times, but finishing the event was twice as good as a race with perfect conditions.

Well done to all who raced and a special thank you to the wonderful SBTC crew.

We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Raby Bay and Noosa Triathlons!!!
